Man beaten with hammer as tried to leave Belfast City Cemetery

DETECTIVES are investigating after a man was attacked by masked men and beaten with a hammer as he was leaving Belfast City Cemetery.

Police say the brutal assault happened on Thursday, April 21 at around 2.30 pm.

But details have only now emerged as the 29-year-old victim reported the attack to police on Friday, April 29.

It is understood a number of masked man in a white Hyundai car blocked the victim’s path as he tried to leave the cemetery on the Falls Road.

They then jumped out of the car and attacked him with a hammer.

The helpless victim need needed treatment in the Royal Victoria Hospital for several leg injuries.

Detectives in west Belfast have appealed for any witnesses or anyone with information on the attack to contact them on the non-emergency number of 101.
