NORTH Belfast DUP MLA William Humphrey has expressed his outrage at the burglary of two senior citizens living in the Agnes Street area of the Shankill in west Belfast.

The party is now calling for a statutory sentence for those who burgle and steal from pensioners.

The MLA has revealed that five masked men forced their way into the elderly brothers’ house late on Tuesday night last week, 4th August.

After confronting one brother downstairs and the other, aged 84, in his bed they stole a sum and money along with medication.

Said William Humphrey: “I am deeply angry and disgusted by this cruel burglary.

“These two brothers live quietly in our community and these heartless bullies have taken advantage of them.

“It is a relief that they were not physically harmed, but this has been a very traumatic and upsetting experience for them.

“They are left feeling vulnerable and unsafe in their own home.

“The cowards responsible for this appalling crime are beneath contempt. I earnestly appeal to anyone who can assist the police to catch those responsible, wherever they are from, and bring them to justice to pass on whatever information they can without delay.

“The Democratic Unionist Party is seeking to bring in a statutory sentence for those who burgle or attack our senior citizens and this appalling crime in the sort of incident in which that should be made to apply.”
