ONH BEHIND ARMED ROBBERY BID ON WEST BELFAST BOOKIES SHOP

ONH PICOGLAIGH na hEireann are being blamed for an attempt to rob a bookies shop this week.

Two men armed with a gun and a hammer stormed the Paddy Power shop.

The incident happened in the Suffolk Road area on Thursday at around 7.30pm.

The would-be robbers, who are described as over 6 ft tall, hit a thick glass partition in the shop several times.

The glass failed break or shatter and the two ONH members left empty-handed.

One line of enquiry is that they are from an ONH cell in the nearby Lenadoon area desperate for cash.

Members of staff escaped to a back room and were not injured but were left badly shaken.

Detective Sergeant Kenneth Leckey said: “I would appeal to anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in this area or who has information to contact Detectives at Woodbourne PSNI Station on the non-emergency number 101.

“Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Police are already bracing themselves for a run of robberies on cash-in-transit vans and shops holding cash.
