A 32-year-old man injured in a loyalist gun attack in the Waterside area of Derry last night was “shot by appointment,” DUP MLA William Hay has said.

The man is recovering in Altnagelvin Hospital after being shot in both legs in the loyalist Lincoln Courts at around 11.30pm.

Mr Hay said the victim was “ordered” to go to a play park in the area before being shot.

Mr Hay said the incident “mirrored” the actions of dissident republicans on Derry’s cityside when young people were “ordered to come” to a particular area to be shot.

He added: “This is the first time that we’ve had an incident of this nature in the Waterside area.”

The shooting incident is being investigated by detectives from the PSNI’s Terrorist Investigation Unit based at Strand Road.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact detectives on the non-emergency number 101.
