THE PSNI say a security alert in west Belfast was an elaborate hoax.

Police and Army Technical Officers (ATOs) were sent to Moyard Parade, near the New Barnsley estate off the Springfield Road, on Tuesday afternoon following reports of a suspicious object.

As a result, police evacuated a number of homes while ATO examined the object.

The alert ended some time later when the object was found to be a hoax. It has been taken away for further testing.

All families have now been allowed to return home.
