It reveals that over 80 per cent of UK consumers send the same or more text messages than a year ago.
The survey shows that 60% of UK consumers send roughly the same number of texts as a year ago and 22% say they send more. Only 17% of UK consumers say they send fewer text messages than a year ago.
A quarter (24%) of females surveyed send more text messages than a year ago compared to a fifth (19%) of males that say they send more text messages than a year ago.
The average UK consumer sends 50 texts per week according to the Ofcom Communications Market Report 2012. The first ever text – sent in December 1992 – simply read ‘Merry Christmas’, after being sent by engineer Neil Papworth from his personal computer to Vodafone’s Richard Jarvis.
