Detectives in Newry are questioning a 79-year-old man over an attempted murder

DETECTIVES from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team have arrested a 79-year-old man for attempted murder.

He was detained after a 50-year-old man was shot in the stomach and knee at Parkhead Crescent in Newry, Co Down.

Police and paramedics were called to the street around 7 pm on Saturday evening.

The shooting victim was first taken to Newry’s Daisy Hill Hospital for emergency surgery.

However, he was later transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where his condition is described by staff as critical.

The shooting may have been the result of a domestic dispute.

Local SDLP MLA Dominic Bradley said: “This type of action has no support whatsoever in Newry and cannot be justified.

“It is wrong and no strategy, aims, or objectives can make it right.

“I would appeal to anyone who can help the police in their investigation of this crime to do so without delay.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact MIT detectives at Ardmore PSNI station on 0845 600 8000.
