POLICE are at the scene of a security outside the east Belfast office of Alliance Party MP Naomi Long on Tuesday morning.

The alert was sounded after a suspicious object was found outside the building on the Upper Newtownards Road around 11 am.

Army technical officers are currently at the scene examining the object.

As a result, police have closed the road between its junctions with the Beersbridge Road and Grampian Avenue.

The Alliance Party office was the scene earlier this year of loyalist protests.

It follows the party’s decision to put forward a motion for the Union flag to be flown over Belfast City Hall on designated days only.

MP Naomi Long had to receive police protection following a loyalist death threat.

Tuesday’s security operation is the fifth alert in Belfast in the past 24 hours.

Earlier, several families were evacuated from their homes in north Belfast over an overnight alert.

The ATO was called after a suspicious was found at Silverstream Avenue in Ballysillan.

The families were allowed back home around 5 am when the object was declared a hoax.
