ULSTER motorists are paying the through nozzle for fuel, say the AA.

Petrol and diesel is so high drivers are pawning their valuables just for a fill up.

And other motorists have been driving around on fumes until the car runs out of petrol.

The AA carried out a survey of 23,824 members.

It found that one per cent of members had sold a possession in the past 18 months just to put fuel in their tank.

This figure rose to four per cent for those aged 18-24.

Others had taken out high-interest pay-day loans or a bank loan just to carry on driving.

New figures out also reveal that drivers in Ulster are shunning big, petrol guzzling cars for little nippy run-arounds.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers, the best selling car in Ulster is the Vauxhall Astra.

It is hotly followed by the Volkswagen Golf, Nissan Qashqai, Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio, Peugeot 207 and Vauxhall Corsa.

Figures also reveal that new cars sales last month are up almost 20 per cent to a five year high.

Analysts say the jump in new car sales is a further sign of green shoots in the province’s economy after the 2008 downturn.
