POLICE are hunting the female driver of a hit-and-run car which knocked down a pensioner while he was out for a morning jog.

The 68-year-old died after being involved in a collision with a car in Carrickfergus, Co Antrim, while out running.

The crash, which involved a silver Peugeot 207 car, happened on Friday morning at around 11.30 am.

The Red Brae Road remains closed at its junction with Liberty Road and Marshallstown Road.

Police are advising motorists to avoid the area.

Officers from the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses to the accident.

They are particularly keen to hear from the female driver of a silver vehicle travelling directly in front of the silver Peugeot 207 involved in the collision.

Police believe the car, which also contained a child, stopped at the scene of the accident.

However, it left before the arrival of police and traveled on in the direction of Carrickfergus.
