THE father of two young boys found strangled to dead in the boot of a car has been arrested on suspicion of their murder.

Sanjeev Chada was discharged from Mayo General Hospital shortly after noon on Wednesday.

He was immediately arrested by Garda detectives for the murder of his sons and brought to Westport police station for questioning.

The 43-year-old is being questioned about why he strangled his sons, 10-year-old Eoghan and five-year-old Ruairi.

The boys’ bodies were found in the boot of a car, which crashed outside Westport on Monday afternoon.

Their father sustained minor injuries when the car he was driving collided with a wall at Rosbeg.

Gardai suspect Mr Chada deliberately drove headlong into the wall in an attempt to take his own life.

Police had earlier issued a cross-border child rescue alert seeking the public’s help in finding the children.

The alarm was raised at 01:30 am on Sunday after they failed to return the family home in Ballinkillen, County Carlow, with their father Sanjeev Chada.

The Republic’s deputy state pathologist is waiting on toxicology tests to see if the brothers had been drugged before they were strangled to death.

The boys had been dead for a number of hours prior to the crash.

Final preparations are being made to bring the boys’ remains back to County Carlow from Mayo to be met by their heartbroken mother.
