POLICE are advising motorists to avoid parts of north Belfast on Sunday evening because of rioting.

It comes after First Minister and DUP leader Peter Robinson called for an end to the violence of the past two days.

Rioting has erupted after loyalist crowds from Rathcoole moved into the nationalist Elmfield area of Glengormley.

A number of cars have been set on fire.

In the Shore Road, a 70-strong crowd, some wearing masks, have come out onto the road near the Mount Vernon housing estate.

Motorists have reported that a number of the crowd have attempted to hijack cars passing through the area.
