CUSTOMS officers have seized 10.4million cigarettes with a street value of €4.6m at Dublin Port.

The ‘Gold Classic’ brand cigarettes were discovered on Friday in an unaccompanied 40-foot container which had arrived on a ferry from Rotterdam.

The find has a potential loss to the ROI exchequer of €3.7m.

Irish Revenue’s investigations are ongoing.

A statement from the Customs Service said: “This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal cigarettes in the shadow economy.

“If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding the smuggling or sale of illegal cigarettes or tobacco, they can contact Revenue in confidence on freephone number 1800 295 295.”
