Police at the scene of a security alert in north Belfast

POLICE are at the scene of a security alert in north Belfast.

It follows the discovery of a suspicious object.

A number of homes on the Somerton Park in the Skegoneill area have been evacuated for safety reasons.

Army technical officers are now at the scene.

Somerton Park is closed at its junction with Somerton Road.

Landsdowne Road is closed at its junction of Lansdowne Park and also, at its junction with Antrim Road.

Diversions are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek an alternative route.
