THOUSANDS of tyres have been removed from a bonfire site in Ballyduff, Co Antrim.

UUP councillor and local community worker John Scott said that a private contractor had been brought in on Friday morning, May 24, to remove around 4,000 tyres from the site at Forthil Drive.

It followed negotiations between bonfire builders and local residents.

The move came after a number of residents living in Ballyduff and New Mossley had called for the removal of tyres from the bonfire sites in both estates.

They had accused government agencies of “passing the buck” on the issue.

In 2009, thousands of tyres were removed from a bonfire in the New Mossley estate.
