TWO REMANDED OVER ROCKET LAUNCHER FIND IN REPUBLIC

TWO Limerick men have appeared before a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court charged with membership of the IRA.

Noel Noonan, 34, and Thomas McMahon, 31, were arrested on Thursday night near Cahir, Co Tipperary as part of an investigation into the activities of dissident republicans.

A number of rocket launchers and explosives were seized along with two cars.

Mr Noonan, with an address at North Claughan Rd, Garryowen and Mr McMahon of Ros Fearna, Murroe were charged with membership of an unlawful organisation within the State styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hÉireann, otherwise the IRA.

Detective Garda Brendan Tighe told State solicitor Gareth Henry that he formally arrested Mr Noonan at 5pm on Saturday afternoon in Cahir.

He said that at the time of the arrest he believed Mr Noonan had committed the offence of membership of an illegal organisation within the State.

Det Gda Tighe said that Mr Noonan made no reply when the charge was read over to him.

Detective Garda Ronan O’Driscoll told Mr Henry that he formally arrested Thomas McMahon shortly before 6pm in Clonmel.

He said that Mr McMahon replied “okay” after he was charged and cautioned.

There was no application for bail.

However, counsel for both parties, Michael Bowman BL, said it was anticipated such an application would be made at the next hearing of the case.

Presiding judge Mr Justice Paul Butler, sitting with Judge Margaret Heneghan and Judge Flannan Brennan, remanded both men in custody to appear again until February 15.

A third man was released on Saturday and a file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
