Security alert at Glengormley PSNI station

THE suspicious object found close to Glengormley police station has been declared a hoax.

It sparked a security alert in the Antrim Road area of the Co Antrim town on Thursday morning.

Army technical officers were tasked to the scene to examine the suspicious object.

The road surrounding the police station has been closed in both directions and motorists were advised to avoid the area and take an alternative route.

The surrounding roads have now been re-opened.

The police station, which is earmarked for closure, is close to a children’s activity and play centre.

Newtownabbey councillor Noreen McClelland said the security alert caused “considerable disruption” to traffic during the morning rush hour.

“The Antrim Road is a busy route particularly during rush hour,” said the SDLP representative. “The discovery of a suspicious object meant police had to block this road off.

“The fact that the road was opened again after an hour or so is to be welcomed but during that time serious disruption was caused to motorists simply trying to get to work.

“People want to just go about their daily business safely and swiftly, they don’t want nor need this kind of disruption”.
