Scene in Omagh after dissidents hurl bomb at policeman’s home

A security alert in Co Tyrone was declared a hoax on Saturday just a week after a pipe bomb attack on a PSNI officer.

The alarm was raised after a police patrol found a suspicious object attached to a telegraph pole, at about 10am, in the village Eglish.

The discovery was made at the junction of the Cadian Road and the Killyliss Road, which has been closed to traffic.

Officers feared it was a booby trap style bomb device and Army technical officers were tasked to the scene.

A police spokesperson said the device was examained and declared a hoax.

A week ago a PSNI officer fired shots after he spotted suspicious activity near his former home in Omagh.

In a follow up search, police found a crude home made pipe bomb device which had been thrown at the property.

Detectives from the Serious Crime Branch are treating the attack as attempted murder.
