DOCTORS were fighting on Tuesday night to save the life of an eight-year-old boy.

The young boy is in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast after being knocked down in the west of the city.

He was hit by a vehicle on the Grosvenor Road close to the recreation centre at around 3pm on Tuesday.

An ambulance service spokesman said the child was rushed to hospital for treatment to head, leg and arm injuries.

A Belfast Trust spokeswoman confirmed that the boy remained in a critical condition in hospital on Tuesday night.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the crash – involving a light coloured Honda CRV 4X4 type vehicle – to come forward.

As part of a follow-up police invesstigation, part of the Grovesnor Road was closed but re-opened on Tuesday evening.
