A NUMBER of families were forced to leave their homes in a security alert in north Belfast on Tuesday night.
Dissident republicans left an explosive device close to a community centre on the Shore Road at Whitewell.
Army bomb experts were tasked to defuse the device while police sealed off the scene.
The road was closed between the Whitewell Road and the M2 offslip but later reopened.
Local PUP representative Phil Hamilton said he was “disgusted” that a device had been left near the community centre.
“I am disgusted to hear a community house in Greencastle was target by an explosive device.
“Earlier, young children were on the premises.
“Republicans target a community house in Greencastle and put people’s lives at risk.
“This community house does great work and cross community work.”
