A BLIZZARD of snow has forced over 80 schools in Northern Ireland to close to pupils and staff on Tuesday.

A heavy snowfall on Monday evening was compounded overnight with ice which is continuing to affect many roads.

And the forecast is bleak with the Met Office saying that a yellow weather warning remains in place.

Road chiefs treacherous conditions have hit many parts including Lisburn, Comber, Ballygowan, Upper Braniel, Craigantlet hills, Gilnahirk, Ballynahinch, Downpatrick and Saintfield areas.

The B27 Moyad Road over Spelga also currently remains closed.

Motorists have been advised to give themselves extra travel time and also slow down.

“Snow continues to affect roads and with temperatures generally below freezing there is also a risk of ice on roads this morning,” the Roads Service said.

“Salting operations are continuing on the scheduled network this morning with ploughing ongoing where required.

“Additional contractor resources have also been deployed in areas of the north-east to assist with snow removal.”

Translink says a number a metro services are being affected and some routes diverted. A number of Ulsterbus services have been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

It comes after the icy weather caused widespread disruption on Monday night, with a number of roads being closed and long tail backs on the M1.

Breakdowns on the motorway westbound at Stockman’s Lane – and later a stranded lorry – caused lane closures and left queues of traffic stretching from Broadway.

Some drivers in Co Antrim and Co Down experienced delays of up to two hours.

Areas including Lisburn, Comber, Saintfield, Ballygowan, Hillsborough, Carryduff, the Castlereagh hills, Dundonald, Holywood, Moira, Ballynahinch, Dromore, Dromara, Banbridge, Rathfriland and Castlewellan were also all badly hit.

Northern Ireland’s airports are open for business and operational but passengers are advised to check websites for updates because of knock-on effects from other airports.

The Met Office said a frosty start to the day can be expected away from the north and east coast with risk of ice, but it will soon melt away leaving a mainly dry and bright day.
