POLICE WARN BELFAST ROADS CLOSED AS UNION FLAG PROTESTS GET UNDERWAY

PROTESTORS have blocked a number of roads on Tuesday evening as fresh Union flag protests are held.

The crossroads at Finaghy Road and Upper Lisburn Road is closed and diversions are in place.

The Oldpark Road/Ballysillan Road is close also due to a protest.

Traffic is moving again on Donegall Road is closed at its junction with the Broadway roundabout in south Belfast ahead of tonight’s IRN-BRU semi-final match between Linfield and Crusaders.

The Shore Road was blocked at Mount Vernon due to a protest and traffic is diverted up Donegall Park Avenue. It has now re-opened and the protest passed off peacefully.

PUP leader Billy Hutchinson who attended it said he believed the protests should continue.

Another protest is being held on the Crumlin Road at is junction with Cambrai Street.

The Milltown Road, south Belfast was closed due to a protest and diversions are in place at the Ballylesson Road and Belvoir Road roundabout. It has now re-opened.

Police land rovers have moved into areas as the flag protest enters its nineth day.

Other protests planned for Tuesday are:

* Mount Vernon, north Belfas – 4.30pm;

* Conway Square, Newtownards – 6pm

* Harland and Wolff Welders Club, east Belfast: 6.30pm;

* Portadown – 7pm;

* Magherafelt – 7.30pm.
